Install Rushwise and take the first tour

How to install Rushwise, the new app for Davinci Resolve editors: download it, open it on your Mac for the first time, activate your license, switch on the one Davinci Resolve setting it needs and take the five minute tour. Part 1 of the Rushwise Academy, where I show every part of the app, step by step.

What you need

First, what you need. A Mac with Apple silicon or an Intel processor, with macOS 15 Sequoia or newer. For the Davinci features you need Davinci Resolve Studio, the paid version. Rushwise is tested with Studio 21. Don't have Studio? Then everything else still works: the safe card offload, your folders, the overview, work steps, client feedback, notes and backups.

The email from Gumroad

After you buy Rushwise, you get an email from Gumroad with two things in it: the download, and your license key. Keep that email close, you'll need the key in a minute.

Download and install

Click download. Your Mac usually unzips the file by itself. If not, just double-click it. In the folder you find Rushwise, a Read me first, the user guide in English and in Dutch, and the license terms. Drag Rushwise into your Applications folder. That's the install.

Opening it the first time

Now open it. The first time, macOS says it could not verify Rushwise. That's expected. Rushwise isn't notarized by Apple, and you only see this message once. Click Done. Open System Settings and go to Privacy and Security. Scroll down to Security. There it says Rushwise was blocked to protect your Mac. Click Open Anyway, and enter your Mac password. If macOS asks once more, click Open Anyway again. From now on, Rushwise opens like any other app.

Give access

macOS also asks if Rushwise may use your Documents folder and removable volumes, which means your cards. Click Allow. Rushwise needs this to read your cards and to work with your folders.

Choose your language

Rushwise starts with one simple question: Nederlands or English. Pick your language. The whole app follows, and you can change it later in Settings.

Activate

Next, you activate Rushwise. Copy the license key from your Gumroad email, paste it here, and click Activate. Can't find your key? Click Where do I find my key. It's in the email from Gumroad, and in your Gumroad library under Rushwise. You do this only once. It needs the internet once, and after that Rushwise works offline too.

Two Macs

One license works on up to two of your own Macs, for example your desktop and your laptop. Getting a new Mac? Just reply to your Gumroad receipt, and I'll free up your key.

Set up Davinci once

Rushwise now asks if you want the tour. Before you click, there's one setting in Davinci Resolve Studio you change once. In Davinci, open Preferences, then System, then General. Set External scripting using to Local, save, and restart Davinci. That's all. Now Rushwise can set up your projects in Davinci. Just keep Davinci open when you use the Davinci buttons in Rushwise.

The tour

Back to Rushwise. I really recommend the tour. In about five minutes you do everything once, for real, with a practice project and practice clips that come with the app. Your own footage isn't touched. Click Start the tour. The screen dims, and Rushwise shows you one thing at a time. Click Next to go on, Previous to go back, and Stop whenever you like. You look at the overview and the folder structures, add media from a practice card, see the summary, and your first work step ticks itself. With Davinci open, you put the practice project into Davinci and make its timelines. No Davinci? Just skip that step. Then client feedback, the log, and the three dots for more. Every part you see here gets its own video in this series.

After the tour, or on your own

At the end, Rushwise asks if you want to learn how to make your own folders. That's part three, so for now I click Close. And if you'd rather look around on your own, choose Start on my own instead of the tour. You can take the tour any time later.

The question marks

Everywhere in Rushwise you see small question marks. Click one, and you get a short explanation of that part, right where you need it.

Settings

In Settings, under Help and tour, you find all of it again. Here you hide the question marks once you know your way around. You start the tour again, or one of the three short guides: how to make your folders, how to set up Davinci, and how to make your work steps. Done practising? Click Remove practice project. It leaves your list, and its folder stays in your Documents, so you can throw it away yourself. Below that, under License, you see who Rushwise is licensed to, and you can enter another key. About once a month Rushwise checks your license in the background. No internet at that moment? That's fine, it never locks you out for that.
