Rushwise Academy · Part 7 of 13 · Safe offload

When is it safe to format your SD card?

Why a card offload with Rushwise is safe: every copy is checked against the card, a second card from the same shoot only adds what is missing, unknown files stay on the card, and the summary tells you exactly when you can format your card. Part 7 of the Rushwise Academy, the series about the app for Davinci Resolve editors.

Premieres on Sun 1 Nov

Every copy is checked

Rushwise copies every file under a hidden name first. Only when the copy is complete, and exactly the same size as on the card, does it get its real name. So a half copied file never looks like a real clip, not even when a cable comes loose.

Before it starts

Before the first file, Rushwise checks a few things. Did you pick a card, and not your whole Mac or your project drive? Is there enough room on the disk, and can it hold large clips? If something is wrong, nothing is copied, and Rushwise tells you why.

What it leaves out

It also knows what not to copy: thumbnails, proxies and the camera's own system files. And clip folders from RED, ARRI or CinemaDNG cameras stay together, as one clip.

A second card

Two cards from one shoot, for example from a camera that records to both? Add the second card to the same project. Rushwise only adds what the first card missed. Same name, but different content? Then both are kept, and the summary shows you which.

Green, calm or red

Then the summary tells you what to do. Green: everything is in and checked, so you can safely format the card. Calm grey: everything your structure needs is in, but something stays on the card, like the photos you switched off. Format it later. Red: something was not copied. Don't format the card, and click Try again.

Files it doesn't know

Files Rushwise doesn't know, like the MTS files of an older camcorder, stay on the card. The summary lists them, so you can copy them by hand. And it will never call that card safe.

Warnings stay

And when something went wrong, the project keeps a warning, until you click Seen. So nothing slips through.
